Malian troops open Frances Bastille Day parade in honor of anti terrorism ...

Posted on 03:00 by Ashish Chaturvedi

Despite the triumphal display which included flyovers by fighter jets tanks and giant trucks mounted with land to air defense systems the realities in Mali suggest that President Francois Hollande s military intervention has had mixed results.

The mission he launched in January helped the Malian government retake control of much of the country from al Qaida linked extremists who had seized northern Mali and threatened the capital. The nation is to hold elections July 28 but tensions involving rebel Tuaregs in the north linger along with political instability.

Sunday s events however focused on the positive.

It s a victory that was won Hollande said in an interview after the parade with the France 2 and TF 1 television stations in the garden of the presidential Elysee Palace. Look at what happened. It was a victory for Africa a victory against terrorism and pride that we must have.

He said earlier the presence of African troops in Paris on the French national day was a tribute to those who actively helped to banish terrorism from the Malian territory.

Referring to trips he s made to Africa including a February visit to Mali four weeks after the start of the French intervention Hollande said I was saluted in Africa not for what I said but for what I did.

He noted that some extremists once lodged in Mali escaped into southern Libya and other neighboring countries. He said those nations need support but we won t make war everywhere.

Hollande oversaw the display of military might that France rolls out each year on Bastille Day with Mali interim President Dioncounda Traore and U.N. chief Ban Ki moon at his sides. Defense ministers from the African nations represented in the parade also were present.

French Defense Minister Jean Yves Le Drian said before the parade that the display is the mark of a solidarity that concretely expressed itself in Mali and of a common destiny even beyond the limits of continents of which we have every reason to be proud.

But some critics say the Mali operation and African presence in the parade reflect France s ambiguous and sometimes patronizing relations with the continent especially with former colonies such as Mali often referred to as Francafrique.

The French non governmental organization Survie which is fighting against neocolonialism condemned the self proclaimed role of gendarme of Africa that France claimed in Mali.

This parade gives a scent of victory to a military operation which is far from being reasonably presented like that given the numerous shadows that surround it and the remaining uncertainties concerning its outcome said Fabrice Tarrit the president of the association.

The critics also include Africans.

Knowing the history of France especially French armies with Africa it doesn t sound good said Senegalese rapper Keyti whose real name is Cheikh Sene 40.

This last decade we ve been trying to be really independent from the French army especially since they had camps in certain countries around Africa he said. And now with what happened in Mali what s still happening there it s like they found another way to come in.

Around 50 Malian troops marched in formation Sunday followed by soldiers from Benin Burkina Faso Ivory Coast Ghana Guinea Liberia Niger Nigeria Senegal Sierra Leone Chad and Togo.

They were followed by troops from the U.N. stabilization mission in Mali which took over the French led military operation on July 1. Some French soldiers who participated in the Mali operation called Serval also marched and aircraft used in Mali notably to provide cover for ground troops were featured in the air display.

France had more than 4 000 troops at the height of the campaign and is now gradually reducing that. France will keep about 1 000 soldiers in Mali after the end of 2013.

In all 4 800 troops marched in front of the presidential stage Sunday along with 241 horses 265 vehicles and 58 planes.

Bringing up the rear was an array of 35 helicopters used in wartime and for civilian missions. Precision parachutists landed in front of the presidential stand to close the parade.

American champion Tyson Gay who went out of his way to promote himself as ...

Posted on 02:00 by Ashish Chaturvedi

The list reads like a Who's Who among the world's best sprinters

Jamaican Asafa Powell the former world record holder at 100 meters.

American champion Tyson Gay who went out of his way to promote himself as an anti drug athlete.

Jamaican Sherone Simpson who has a gold and two silver Olympic medals to her credit.

Word came Sunday that all three had failed drug tests. A sad day one former track official called it and certainly a day that punctured the myth that the oft troubled sport has cleaned up its act.

I am not now nor have I ever been a cheat Powell said in a message released through his Twitter account.

Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt (left) and compatriot Asafa Powell celebrate after finishing first and second in the men's 100m at the Diamond League athletics meet at Bislett Stadium in Oslo June 7 2012.

The 30 year old Powell whose 100 meter record of 9.74 stood until Usain Bolt beat it in 2008 was calling for an investigation as to how a stimulant called oxilofrine entered his system and caused a positive test at Jamaica's national championships in June.

Simpson who tested positive for the same stimulant said she would not intentionally take an illegal substance of any form into my system.

Jamaica's Sherone Simpson (left) and Britain's Abiodun Oyepitan compete in the women's 200m heats during the London 2012 Olympic Games Aug. 6 2012.

Gay the American record holder in the 100 was more contrite though he wasn't taking full responsibility.

I don't have a sabotage story. I don't have any lies. I don't have anything to say to make this seem like it was a mistake or it was on USADA's hands someone playing games said Gay who fought back sobs in a telephone interview. I don't have any of those stories. I basically put my trust in someone and I was let down.

Gay who won the 100 and 200 meters at U.S. nationals last month said he would pull out of the world championships.

The 30 year old who won the world championship in the 100 200 and 4x100 relay in 2007 took part in the U.S. Anti Doping Agency's My Victory program in which athletes volunteer for enhanced testing to prove they're clean and his results never raised red flags. Until that is an out of competition test May 16 where results came back positive for a banned substance the identity of which neither he nor USADA CEO Travis Tygart would reveal.

Gay said his B sample will be tested soon possibly as early as this week.

Generally first time offenders are hit with two year bans though reduced penalties are sometimes given if there are extenuating circumstances which both Gay and his coach Lance Brauman said there were.

He mentioned that he (trusted) someone and that person was untrustworthy at the end the day Brauman told The Associated Press in a phone interview. Maybe I'm naive but I believe him.

Max Siegel the CEO of USA Track and Field said in a statement It is not the news anyone wanted to hear at any time about any athlete. He said he looked to USADA to handle the case appropriately.

Siegel's predecessor at USATF Doug Logan called it a sad day.

But I don't see anything on the horizon that says this will be abated in any way Logan told AP.

The former CEO recently wrote a column arguing the fight against performance enhancing drugs in sports should be ceded because in his view anti doping rules make very little headway against a problem that never seems to disappear. He said he wasn't surprised when he heard about Sunday's onslaught of failed tests and didn't put much credence into the excuses and apologies from those who came up positive.

Over the course of time culture has bred certain defenses Logan said. The reality is people are using substances to reengineer their bodies or heal better. That's reality.

Four time Olympic medalist and sprint analyst Ato Boldon also called it a difficult day because track and field fans are left not knowing what to believe.

Everyone has that favorite that one guy Hey this is the guy I've always been a supporter of his ' Boldon said. Asafa and Tyson are certainly two people who a lot of track fans have loved and admired for a long time. Unfortunately they failed drug tests.

While Gay's case gets sorted out on U.S. turf the positives recorded by Powell and Simpson are part of a bigger doping crisis hitting Jamaica the home of Bolt and the country that has won 28 medals over the last three Olympics.

In Sunday's editions The Gleaner newspaper of Jamaica reported that five athletes had tested positive. Paul Doyle the agent who represents Powell and Simpson confirmed to the AP that his sprinters were among them. Shortly after Doyle's confirmation Powell and Simpson each released statements acknowledging the positive tests.

The news stirred up angst on the island where success on the track is a point of pride but the rigor of the country's anti doping program is under constant scrutiny.

This does not auger well for track and field globally said Rashalee Mitchell a 29 year old assistant social sciences lecturer at Jamaica's campus of the University of the West Indies. It is fast serving to taint ... our proud and long standing reputation of producing strong excellent raw homegrown talent that has excelled on the world stage without any drug related enhancement.

The news came a month after another Jamaican Olympic gold medalist Veronica Campbell Brown tested positive for a banned diuretic.

Campbell Brown is being suspended while a disciplinary panel reviews her case. Track's governing body said the case appeared to involve a lesser offense which could mean a reduced sentence for the 200 meter champion at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics.

Shortly after news of Campbell Brown's positives her agent Claude Bryan said his client is not a cheat and she does not accept guilt of willfully taking a banned substance.

The known banned substances in these cases a diuretic and a stimulant don't resemble the steroids and designer drugs that took down some of the world's top athletes Marion Jones Tim Montgomery Ben Johnson to name a few over the past years and decades. But many of the denials and claims of extenuating circumstances in the current cases carry a whiff of familiarity.

And once again track is in the news for the wrong reasons falling short of promises the sport's leaders make about cleaning things up every time the next cycle of doping stories hit.

This result has left me completely devastated in many respects said Powell who didn't qualify for individual spots at worlds but could still make Jamaica's relay team if his positive test doesn't net a suspension. I am reeling from this genuinely surprising result. I am confident however that I will come out stronger and wiser and better prepared to deal with the many twists and turns of being a professional athlete.

Tyson Gay has tested positive for a banned substance and has said he'll pull out of next month's world championships in Moscow.

Gay told the Associated Press he was notified by the U.S. Anti Doping Agency of the positive test late last week. He wouldn't reveal the substance but said the positive test came from a May 16 out of competition test the AP reported.

I don't have a sabotage story. I don't have any lies. I don't have anything to say to make this seem like it was a mistake or it was on USADA's hands someone playing games said Gay who fought back sobs as he spoke to the AP. I don't have any of those stories. I basically put my trust in someone and I was let down.

He did not disclose to whom he was referring when he said he was let down.

MORE Jamaican sprinters test positive

He would not go into specifics of the case when asked by the AP whether he tested positive for a steroid.

I have to go over everything with USADA first he said. I will take whatever punishment I get like a man. I do realize and respect what I put in my body and it is my responsibility.

I'm going to be honest with USADA about everything everybody I've been with every supplement I've ever taken every company I've ever dealt with everything.

REACTION Gay's coach speaks out against doping

USADA released a statement Sunday confirming the positive test. In response to Mr. Gay's statements USADA appreciates his approach to handling this situation and his choice to voluntarily remove himself from competition while the full facts surrounding his test are evaluated the statement read. The B sample will be processed shortly and as in all cases all athletes are innocent unless or until proven otherwise through the established legal process and any attempt to sensationalize or speculate is a disservice to due process fair play and to those who love clean sport.

USA Track Field CEO Max Siegel released a statement that said it supports USADA in the fight against drugs in sport. We do not know the facts of this case and look to USADA to adjudicate it and handle it appropriately. It is not the news anyone wanted to hear at any time about any athlete.

Gay 30 has struggled with injuries the past five years. This season he has run the top three fastest times in the world in the 100 meters. He won gold at the U.S. championships in Des Moines last month dominating the field to finish in 9.75 seconds. It was his fourth U.S. title at the distance. He also claimed the 200 title at nationals winning in 19.74 seconds. It's the second fastest time in the 200 this season just .01 second behind Usain Bolt's 19.73 which he ran last weekend.

Gay is the American record holder in the 100 with a 9.69 set in 2007 the season he was a world champion in the 100 200 and 4x100.

Earlier this season he spoke of overcoming major hip surgery in 2011. People are quick to forget some of the things you have accomplished he said.

At last summer's London Olympics Gay was heartbroken after coming in fourth in the 100 failing to win a bronze medal by one hundredth of a second. I just ran with all my heart Gay said. There was nothing left in the tank. I didn't get a medal but I gave it my all.

He won an Olympic silver medal as part of the USA's 4x100 relay team in London.

In the past Gay had been part of USADA's My Victory. I compete clean program with 10 other athletes from Summer Olympic sports. His statement on the USADA web site read I compete clean because I really believe in fairness and besides that my Mom would kill me Just being honest. My mother and my sister have been great role models for me.

Freak Show Tim Lincecums no hitter a show of will

Posted on 00:00 by Ashish Chaturvedi

SHARECONNECT 13 TWEETCOMMENTEMAILMORE

For anybody who has seen him regularly over the last season and a half the natural reaction was Lincecum Really ''

More often than not in 2012 and '13 Tim Lincecum has looked lost bewildered absolutely incapable of recapturing the brilliance he displayed in his two Cy Young Award winning seasons which feel like decades ago.

Even when he was striking out more than a batter an inning he could seem like the worst starting pitcher in the National League which statistically he was last season.

And then he goes out and throws a no hitter he wills his way to a no hitter with an unfathomable 148 pitches and thoughts of glory days past and maybe even future flicker through your head.

Lincecum Really

He appeared to have a better chance of getting sent to the bullpen or of getting shipped out of town altogether what with his free agency approaching and the San Francisco Giants fading fast than of shackling an opponent.

BIG TIME TIMMY No hitter latest feat on Lincecum's resume

This is a guy who came into Saturday's 9 0 gem against the San Diego Padres with a 4 9 record earned fully on merit accompanied by a 4.61 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP.

Granted he had only received 12 runs of support in his last 10 starts but Lincecum had lost nine of his last 11 decisions with a 4.78 ERA in that stretch. He had seven quality starts in 18 appearances. The last time he'd thrown a complete game was in 2011.

There was not much evidence such a breakthrough was in the offing.

PENCE WITH THE SAVE Outfielder's amazing catch preserves gem

The one thing Lincecum has maintained through these turbulent last two seasons in the ability to strike batters out and that proved a huge factor on Saturday. He registered nearly half his outs 13 of 27 via strikeout including six in a row between the second and fourth innings.

But strikeouts also build up his pitch counts as do walks one of his chief bugaboos. There have been times when he's been so out of sync unfurling from that unique windup of his you'd swear every batter started with a three ball count.

Lincecum walked four Padres but manager Bruce Bochy said he had no intention of pulling him even as the pitch count mounted and Lincecum himself sounded ready to get past the 150 pitch mark if needed.

I wasn't thinking it was the last out at the end of the no hitter '' he told reporters. I was just running on adrenaline the last couple of innings. My mind kept wanting to go into pitching mode.''

SORRY BLUE Lincecum's wild moment

And indeed pitch and pitch some more he did throwing more than anybody else during a no hitter except for Edwin Jackson in 2010 when he completed his gem with one more pitch at 149.

Lincecum will get an extended rest with the All Star break coming and who knows if this game marks the beginning of a return to his old form. That's probably unlikely but regardless for this one night the Freak show was back on.

WWE Money In The Bank 2013 Live Results Reaction and Analysis

Posted on 21:00 by Ashish Chaturvedi

Welcome to the Bleacher Report live coverage of Money in the Bank 2013. The event emanates from the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia Pennsylvania.

This year's MITB is stacked with the two signature ladder matches and five title matches. We also have Chris Jericho against Ryback in a match where the result will be a good indicator of Ryback's future.

Even with all that gold on the line the two ladder matches are the main focus of this event. Two men will walk out with briefcases containing guaranteed title shots at the time and place of their choosing.

We could even see someone cash in the same night or the following night on Raw. The different possibilities this event presents make this one of the most unpredictable nights of the year.

While the All Star MITB match contains a few former winners the World Title MITB match only has one past winner so there is a very good chance of seeing at least one first time briefcase winner.

Other than John Cena every Money in the Bank winner has cashed in and won the title so winning tonight will almost certainly guarantee a title reign for that person.

The All Star MITB also has a bit of a surprise element to it since Kane has been taken out of the equation. WWE has not announced the name of the final participant yet so we could see another big return besides Rob Van Dam or possibly even one of the losers in the WWE or World title match.

Here is a quick rundown of the card as it currently stands.

The Shield (c) vs. The Usos (Tag Title Match on the Pre Show) Chris Jericho vs. Ryback Curtis Axel (c) vs. Miz (IC Title Match) AJ Lee (c) vs. Kaitlyn (Divas Title Match) Alberto Del Rio (c) vs. Dolph Ziggler (World Title Match) John Cena (c) vs. Mark Henry (WWE Title Match) TBD vs. Randy Orton vs. CM Punk vs. Daniel Bryan vs. Sheamus vs. Christian vs. RVD (WWE Title MITB Match) Wade Barrett vs. Cody Rhodes vs. Damien Sandow vs. Fandango vs. Jack Swagger vs. Antonio Cesaro vs. U.S. Champion Dean Ambrose (World Title MITB Match)

Two different teams are in the World Title MITB Match together so we could see some partners turn on each other when they end up on opposite sides of the ladder. We could also see the Wyatt Family make an appearance. Anything could happen.

Make sure to bookmark this page and come back Sunday at the start of the pre show for live coverage of all the action as it happens on pay per view.

Before the show starts feel free to share your predictions for the show below.

19 year old Jordan Spieth wins John Deere Classic

Posted on 20:00 by Ashish Chaturvedi

Jordan Spieth fires a fist pump after winning the John Deere Classic on Sunday in Silvis Ill. Spieth defeated Zach Johnson and David Hearn on the fifth hole of a playoff.(Photo Charlie Neibergall AP)

SHARECONNECT 17 TWEETCOMMENTEMAILMORE

SILVIS Ill. Jordan Spieth 19 became the youngest player to win a PGA Tour event in 82 years Sunday. And he did it by surviving a grueling five hole sudden death playoff with defending champion Zach Johnson and David Hearn at the John Deere Classic.

Spieth who got into the playoff when he holed a bunker shot on the final hole of regulation that he called the luckiest shot I've ever hit in my life become the youngest winner since 19 year old Ralph Guldahl won the Santa Monica Open in 1931.

I don't know what I did to deserve all those breaks Spieth said.

LEADERBOARD john Deere Classic

Spieth holed a 26 inch putt on the 18th green the fifth playoff hole for a win and new status. The former Texas star came to the Deere as a special temporary member. He heads to the British Open as a full fledged PGA Tour member with a two year exemption. He's also eligible for the season ending playoffs. And he collected a first prize check of $828 000.

I was just so lucky said Spieth who came in with five top 10 finishes this season. That's what it was.

Johnson an Iowa native who had been 3 0 in playoffs including one over Troy Matteson at last year's Deere was denied a 10th career victory.

You've got to tip your cap to Jordan Johnson said.

Spieth started the final round six shots back and promptly bogeyed the first hole. But he birdied five of the last six. The last one was that 44 foot bunker shot. He hit it thin but it took one bounce hit the pin and dropped into the hole.

Extremely fortunate Spieth said.

It looked like Spieth who closed with a 65 and finished at 19 under 265 would make a nice check and head home not to the British Open. But Johnson bogeyed the final hole of regulation for a final round 68. It was his 20th consecutive round in the 60s at TPC Deere Run but it opened the door for Spieth.

Clearly all I needed was a par on 18 so that was very unfortunate Johnson said. I feel like I'm really strong in those situations. At least I have been in the past.

Hearn and third round leader Daniel Summerhays playing in the final group also came to 18 with a share of the lead after Johnson's bogey. Hearn made par but Summerhays left his third shot in the same bunker Spieth had holed out from and made bogey.

Then came a five hole playoff that saw no birdies and multiple golden opportunities for Johnson and then Hearn to win. But Spieth ended up the last man standing.

I dodged multiple bullets Spieth said.

The playoff started at No. 18. Johnson nearly ended it early but his chip shot from behind the green from 30 feet caught the right side of the pin and lipped out.

If the pin isn't in that goes in I guarantee it Spieth said.

Johnson had another great chance on the second hole of the playoff also on No. 18. But his birdie putt burned the right edge of the hole. Spieth made a par putt just under 8 feet to stay alive.

Hearn a Canadian who has never won on the PGA Tour missed birdie putts of 10 feet on No. 16 and inside 5 feet on No. 17 to win. Spieth had made a 7 footer for par before Hearn's miss.

They returned to the 18th again. All three players hit their drives into the right rough. Johnson was stymied behind a tree. Spieth four feet away had a clear shot and was the only one of the three to hit the green. Johnson's punch 9 iron went in the water ending his title hopes.

Spieth two putted for a par and a new lease on his golfing life. Considered golf's next big thing he proved it under pressure Sunday.

I didn't think it would happen this fast Spieth said.

Rick Brown writes for The Des Moines Register.

We are not sure where this rumor started but we would like to put a stop to it immediately his rep for the Dancing With the Stars alum tells JustJared.com. He has been affected personally from the disease as he has had family members who have passed away from cancer.

The good news is this story is untrue.

Alan Dershowitz vs. Angela Corey over misleading Affidavit of Probable Cause

Posted on 17:00 by Ashish Chaturvedi

In early April 2012 Special Prosecutor Angela Corey decided not to take the George Zimmerman case to a Grand Jury opting for the filing of a Criminal Information which then was presented along with an Affidavit of Probable Cause. The Court found probable cause for the charges.

It turned out once pre trial discovery was exchanged that the affidavit upon which probable cause was found had not disclosed a lot of significant exculpatory details. There was no mention of the significant injuries to Zimmerman or of John Good s eyewitness account that Martin was on top of Zimmerman hitting him Mixed Martial Arts style. All the Affidavit said on the subject of the physical confrontation was that there was a struggle.

The Affidavit identified the voice screaming for help as that of Martin based on an interview with his mother but did not reveal what we now know that Martin s father initially denied it was his son.

The Affidavit also was inaccurate such as alleging that the 911 operator instructed Zimmerman not to follow Martin a false fact which lives on in the media mythology of the case.

Alan Dershowitz was livid.

From the post If Angela Corey threatened suit against Dershowitz and Harvard she needs to step down from Zimmerman case June 7 2012 Dershowitz was prophetic

This prosecution stank from the get go. There should be a special prosecutor appointed to investigate this special prosecution.

Kyle Massey NOT Dying of Cancer Despite Widespread Rumor

Posted on 15:00 by Ashish Chaturvedi

Kyle Massey is NOT dying of cancer despite a FALSE rumor spreading on Twitter.

Over the weekend the That s So Raven star become a worldwide trending topic after a fake report claiming the actor was terminally ill circulated on the social media site.

It s not known exactly how the rumor started but it is 100% NOT TRUE.

A rep for the actor tells Gossip Cop Kyle Massey is not dying from cancer and does not have cancer.

The Dancing with the Stars alum s spokesperson says Massey is totally fine but is upset that someone would make light of such a serious subject because he has been affected personally from the disease as he has had family members who have passed away from cancer.

It s unfortunate that someone would fabricate such a story especially in light this weekend s actual sad news.

Tavis Smiley You Can Stand Your Ground Unless You Are A Black Man

Posted on 14:00 by Ashish Chaturvedi

By Alyssa Giannirakis

ABC News

Below you can find some of the notable comments made Sunday on This Week with George Stephanopoulos. Our Zimmerman Trial analysis panel Congressional panel and powerhouse roundtable guests included ABC News Chief Legal Affairs Correspondent and Nightline Anchor Dan Abrams ABC News Senior Justice Correspondent Pierre Thomas Rep. Karen Bass D Calif. Rep. Tom Cole R Okla. Sen. Orrin Hatch R Utah Sen. Amy Klobuchar D Minn. Wall Street Journal editorial page editor Paul Gigot Politico senior political reporter Maggie Haberman New York Times Magazine chief national correspondent Mark Leibovich author of the new book This Town and television and radio host Tavis Smiley.

SMILEY It appears to me and I think many other persons in this country that you can in fact stand your ground unless you are a black man. George Zimmerman was allowed to stand his ground Trayvon Martin was not allowed to stand his ground.

Smiley draws on Dr. King s I Have a Dream speech discusses racial profiling of Trayvon Martin

SMILEY In that speech you will recall the one line that we all seem to know I want my children to one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. George Zimmerman knew nothing of Trayvon Martin s character. All he saw was his color. Something is wrong in this nation. Fifty years after the March on Washington while the Voting Rights Act is being gutted speaking of the Justice Department what they ll do about that perhaps something is wrong when adults can racially profile children.

Abrams says DOJ will have a case but they won t win and they know that

ABRAMS Because they can t win in this case. They won t win and they know that. Now there are two separate questions here that we re discussing. And I think it s important to distinguish them. One is a sort of broad societal right and wrong and what is wrong with our society And that is a fair question to ask. But that is a different question than talking about what happened in that courtroom.

Bass believes Zimmerman verdict was devastating causing fear

BASS Well it was a devastating verdict and I just am very concerned about what message this sends to the community the fear that people must have now.

Klobuchar hopes Martin family takes some solace in outpour of support

KLOBUCHAR And my thoughts are with the family right now. I ve seen this before it is such a hard thing to take. And I hope they take some solace in the support they have across the country. A little 16 year old boy going out to get some snacks at a convenience store shouldn t end up dead.

Hatch counting on the House to come through and stop de facto amnesty

HATCH And all the other gang of eight people were very good too. But let me tell you something I m counting on the House. I m counting on the House getting it even better I m counting on the House realizing that we can t just continue on with this de facto amnesty which is what Marco Rubio calls it. And I think that s an accurate description.

Haberman thinks Spitzer has the potential to eat Stringer alive

HABERMAN I think that if nothing else comes out and I think that if Stringer can t bring a credible case nobody knows who Scott Stringer is. He s a nice man. I ve known him a long time. He s been in Albany he is not a known commodity Spitzer is. It s a down ballot race. This is a race that is largely won on name recognition. I think what you just saw on that interview I think he will do that in the debate. I think that he will eat Stringer alive potentially.

Happy Bastille Day Here are our favorite French moments in pop culture

Posted on 11:00 by Ashish Chaturvedi

Happy Bastille Day (or La F te Nationale if you re actually in France) Though it s a holiday celebrating French independence from monarchic rule French culture and Paris in particular is a theme oft represented onscreen. And who could blame writers directors and actors for falling in love with the City of Light There s the food the national love of art the PDA the style to celebrate here s a feast of our favorite French moments in pop culture.

Of course there are classics like Breathless modern marvels like Amour and anything by Truffaut that should be included without mention but we wanted to take a more literal approach to our roundup choosing visually stunning moments scenes that reference Paris and clips that just ooze Parisian style.

Enjoy Flight of the Conchords season 1 Foux Du Fafa New Zealand musicians Bret (Bret McKenzie) and Jemaine (Jemaine Clement) try to impress girls who work at a bakery with this French 60s style pop song that is equal parts silly and endearing. It s clear by the lyrics that the gents haven t progressed past French 101 but they have a gift for catchy melodies and cute montages. The chorus ( Foux du fafa foux du fafa fafa Foux fu fafa ah ee ah ) is as fresh as a croissant straight out of the oven.

Sex and the City season 6 Pretty much every scene from Carrie s move to Paris is a picturesque dream. We chose this particular moment when Carrie s Paris love is at its height. Newly arrived she visits her hotel room for the first time in the perfect French striped fit with the perfect view of la Tour Eiffel to visit the supposedly perfect man Petrovsky.

Ratatouille (2007) Despite their trash sifting and sewer living rep some rats have finer tastes in food like Remy in Disney s Ratatouille. Remy cooks the title dish a French classic of saut ed vegetables to perfection in an energetic scene that shows his love of French food.

Bridesmaids (2011) Motherf ing Paris Annie (Kristen Wiig) exclaims when she realizes her frenemy/archrival Helen (Rose Byrne) stole her Paris idea for their mutual best friend s birthday. To Annie Paris is an idea to Helen Paris is a strategy and to Lillian (Maya Rudolph) Paris is her dream.

Paris je t aime (2006) Faubourg Saint Denis In this series of shorts celebrating the City of Light this film Faubourg Saint Denis in which Natalie Portman plays an aspiring actress (Francine) with a blind boyfriend (Thomas played by Melchior Beslon) is an arresting take on the city s famous reputation for love. For a moment Thomas thinks the relationship is all over and director Tom Twyker recounts their courtship in the style of a deer in headlights life flashing before your eyes sort of montage that leaves you breathless.

Marie Antoinette (2006) The clich goes that everything and everyone in Paris is beautiful. In this scene from Sofia Coppola s arthouse esque Marie Antoinette starring Kirsten Dunst as the doomed queen aesthetics and Epicurean pleasures abound. With close ups of satin y shoes luscious pastries pugs and a glimpse of Versailles it s Paris porn at its best.

Am lie (2001) In this scene from the movie that made Audrey Tautou the patron saint of impossibly cute pixie French girls Am lie who has struggled with her introversion in professing her feelings for her crush Nino (Mathieu Kassovitz) daydreams that he is coming up the stairs to see her while she bakes and to her surprise it actually comes true.

Beauty and the Beast (1991) Belle Sung here in French Belle traipses around her little village with a book and a dream to go elsewhere (though we wouldn t want to leave France at all). I think for many young American fans this is a formative first impression of French culture albeit a stereotypical one where the townspeople say Bonjour at every turn and boulangeries populate every corner.

Let us know how we did with our picks in the comments What other French moments in pop culture are iconique to you

Kyle Massey cancer Does Kyle have cancer or is it a hoax

Posted on 10:00 by Ashish Chaturvedi

If you search through Massey's Facebook page you won't find any posts about cancer from him but you will see several people's comments dating back to May of this year wishing him well and sending him prayers. Many of those fans however seemed skeptical asking do you really have cancer

The Kyle Massey cancer rumor is more than likely not true. If the actor did have cancer major news sources would have covered the story back when the news broke. According to the report Massey wrote Not doing good. Just found out I have cancer. Please pray for me on his Facebook page. Good luck finding that message on his official page because it doesn't exist.

It is unknown why Massey hasn't cleared up the rumors or why they are spreading like wildfire now allegedly two plus months after Massey supposedly made the announcement. He has been tweeting a lot and in the month of May he went to Vegas and tweeted about partying and living it up... that doesn't sound like someone who was just diagnosed with cancer does it

If Kyle Massey did have cancer chances are you'd know about it and it wouldn't be a small story. Consider this one a hoax.

The NTSB did not identify the intern but said Appropriate actions will be taken to ensure that such a serious error is not repeated.

Asiana Airlines has identified the pilot flying the Boeing 777 that crashed at San Francisco International Airport as Lee Kang Kuk.

Box Office Report Pacific Rim Opens to $3.6 Million Thursday Night Grown ...

Posted on 04:00 by Ashish Chaturvedi

Fanboys turned out in strong numbers Thursday night to see Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim taking in $3.6 million to match the start of World War Z which went on to gross $66.4 million for the weekend.

Pacific Rim Film ReviewDespicable Me 2 Film ReviewGrown Ups 2 Film ReviewMonsters University Film ReviewWorld War Z Film Review

From Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures Pacific Rim made headlines as it opened in Asia on Thursday grossing $3.8 million from seven markets. The 3D sci fic epic outpaced a slew of films that went on to gross between $300 million and $400 million internationally.

SUNDAY UPDATE Box Office Report 'Pacific Rim' Lags 'Grown Ups 2' and 'Despicable Me 2' Vie for No. 1

The news from Australia which often mirrors the U.S. in terms of playability was more troubling. Pacific Rim grossed a soft $666 000 as it opened on Thursday coming in No. 4 behind Despicable Me 2 the opening day of The Heat and Monsters University (with school holidays Despicable 2 and Monsters U are thriving).

Sony's ensemble Adam Sandler comedy Grown Ups 2 didn't do too shabby either as it likewise began rolling out in North America Thursday night grossing an impressive $2.3 million. That's a great result for a comedy and easily bested the $1 million earned Thursday night by box office pleaser The Heat.

Box office experts are divided as to whether Pacific Rim can overcome poor tracking. Based on prerelease tracking they believe it may only open in the $30 million range a financially precarious beginning for a movie that cost at least $190 million to produce (Legendary took the lead on the project and paid for the majority of the budget).

But WB and Legendary believe Pacific Rim could gross well north of $40 million based on strong reviews and the buzz on social media. The big question will be how much Pacific Rim drops. A fanboy driven film often will do especially big business on Friday but see substantial declines as the weekend progresses. That won't be the case if Pacific Rim can lure families as well.

PHOTOS 'Pacific Rim' Premiere Big Robots Bring Out the Big Stars

Pacific Rim pitting giant robots against alien monsters stars Charlie Hunnam Idris Elba Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Day.

Imax theaters should do big business with 23 percent of Thursday night's gross coming from Imax locations ($835 000). Overall 52 percent of the $3.6 million came from 3D locations including Imax.

Pacific Rim opens just as Thomas Tull's Legendary and Warners prepare to part ways. Earlier this week Legendary announced it has struck a new co financing and production deal with Universal.

Sony's Grown Ups 2 with a budget of $80 million opens three years after the original film turned into a box office hit opening to $40.5 million and ultimately grossing $271.4 million worldwide.

The ensemble comedy receiving blistering reviews reteams Sandler with Kevin James Chris Rock David Spade Salma Hayek Maya Rudolph and Maria Bello. Grown Ups 2 had an abysmal 3 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes as of Thursday afternoon.

Sony insiders believe the sequel will open in the same range as the 2010 film.

Universal's megahit Despicable Me 2 could easily stay at No. 1 in its second weekend. The 3D animated tentpole has already earned north of $165 million domestically and over $316 million worldwide.

Tim Lincecum tosses no hitter as Giants beat Padres

Posted on 03:00 by Ashish Chaturvedi

Tim Lincecum the two time Cy Young Award winner whose struggles this season nearly got him banished to the San Francisco Giants' bullpen achieved one of the high points of his decorated career Saturday night when he threw his first no hitter against the Padres in San Diego.

Lincecum dominated the Padres recording a season high 13 strikeouts and throwing a career high 148 pitches in a 9 0 victory over the Padres.

I'm kind of speechless right now Lincecum said in a postgame TV interview.

BOX SCORE Giants 9 Padres 0

Lincecum a free agent after this season had not recorded an out in the eighth inning of any start this season and his outings have been at times erratic and dominant.

But his marketability will surely rise after Saturday's gem which came after he showed some signs of returning to his dominant self. In his previous outing he struck out 11 New York Mets over seven innings in earning a no decision.

Saturday he was far from perfect walking four and hitting another batter. He also benefited from great defensive plays from third baseman Pablo Sandoval and right fielder Hunter Pence whose diving stab of a sinking line drive hit by Alexi Amarista finished off the eighth inning. It also gave Lincecum and the 40 342 fans at Petco Park the sense that this thing was happening.

That Lincecum was at 138 pitches to start the ninth was of little consequence to he or manager Bruce Bochy.

He wouldn't have talked to me the rest of the year said Bochy if I'd have taken him out.

Lincecum's previous high pitch count this season was 114 on May 7 against the Phillies but the thin right hander is no stranger to running up his counts.

In 2008 he threw a then career high 138 pitches in a September start against the Padres. That was one of seven starts that season in which he threw at least 119 pitches.

He went on to win 18 games strike out 265 and claim the first of his two consecutive Cy Young Awards.

Lincecum went on to win two games in the 2010 World Series helping the Giants to their first championship in San Francisco but he struggled the next two seasons as rotation mate Matt Cain who threw a perfect game 13 months ago established himself as the Giants' ace.

But Lincecum did not complain when the Giants relegated him to the bullpen during the 2012 postseason and he played a crucial relief role as the club won its second World Series title in three years.

The going was far rougher earlier in the season. After two starts Lincecum had a 4.91 ERA and 11 walks in 11 innings and he told USA TODAY Sports Hitters are looking at me right now as a real nice piece of meat to eat.

As the season unfolded Lincecum gave the Giants innings to be sure but his season could be best described as erratic. Yet he was just one of the many struggling starters contributing to the overall rotation demise as they sank to last place in the NL West.

But he and the team's struggles seemed very distant Saturday. A significant contingent of Giants fans populated Petco Park and the entire house seemed to be rooting Lincecum on in the late innings and they witnessed history after Lincecum got Yonder Alonso to fly out to left field to end it.

I'm feeling pretty good he said later but I don't think I've really taken in the whole idea of what just happened.

SANFORD Fla. George Zimmerman the man accused of murdering Trayvon Martin was found not guilty of second degree murder and manslaughter Saturday night.

The verdict is the culmination of a case that captured the nation's attention and will undoubtedly be imprinted in America's history. For Zimmerman it means trying to recapture his life after he was at the center of a national maelstrom over racial profiling state gun laws and what constitutes self defense.

The not guilty verdict means the jury of six women found that Zimmerman justifiably used deadly force and reasonably believed that such force was necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself Florida's definition of self defense.

Zimmerman showed no emotion as the verdict was read. After the verdict was read he smiled slightly and shook hands with one of his lawyers.

The unidentified jurors decided Zimmerman didn't intentionally commit an act or acts that caused death or demonstrate a depraved mind without regard for human life Florida's definitions of manslaughter and second degree murder respectively.

In a press conference after the verdict Zimmerman attorney Mark O'Mara said his client will now need to get on with his life.

Mark O'Mara and Don West the attorneys for George Zimmerman said they were satisfied that justice had been served when the jury reached a not guilty verdict.

I think he's going to be great. I think he is still worried. Hopefully everyone will respect the jury's verdict O'Mara said.

He offered his sympathies to Trayvon's parents for the loss of their son. But he said despite the national protests that erupted after the shooting the case had nothing to do with civil rights.

Zimmerman's brother Robert told CNN's Piers Morgan that his brother was processing the reality that he is free.

He has some decompressing to do he said. Our family was emotional. We are exonerated as a family and George is exonerated as a defendant. It's going to take us some time to heal.

For all the euphoria on Zimmerman's team prosecutors and Trayvon's family faced a huge letdown. Trayvon's parents were not in the courtroom when the verdict was read.

Assistant State Attorney Bernie De La Rionda responds to a question about self defense after a not guilty verdict was reached in the trial of George Zimmerman.

Trayvon's father Tracy posted on Twitter Even though I am broken hearted my faith is unshattered. I will always love my baby Tray ... even in his death I know my baby proud of the FIGHT we along with all of you put up for him.

The family's attorney Benjamin Crump thanked all the protesters nationwide who put their hoodies up and to everybody who said 'I am Trayvon.' He urged supporters to remain peaceful despite the verdict.

Lead prosecutor Bernie De la Rionda said I am disappointed in the verdict but I respect it. We accept the jury's verdict.

State Attorney Angela Corey said the case was a challenge. But she said That scream stops when the shot was fired and we always believed it wasTrayvon Martin.

Outside the courtroom demonstrators who supported Trayvon stood in stunned silence. But legal analysts say they were not surprised by the verdict because the prosecution did not prove its case.

The prosecution had no clear narrative witnesses that appeared poorly prepared and at the end of the day this is more of a loss by the prosecution than a win by the defense criminal attorney Darren Kavinoky said.

Susan Constantine a jury consultant and body language expert who attended Zimmerman's trial regularly said the verdict meant there was reasonable doubt. They just could not put the pieces together she said.

The case has gripped the nation since the shooting happened on Feb. 26 2012. Police initially did not charge Zimmerman with a crime citing Florida's stand your ground law which allows someone who believes they are in imminent danger to take whatever steps are necessary to protect themselves.

Protests ensued in several cities including New York by supporters of Trayvon's family. Many protesters voiced the opinion that Trayvon was targeted and killed for racial reasons. Trayvon 17 was black and Zimmerman is Hispanic.

You have a little black boy who was killed said Benjamin Crump an attorney for the parents of Trayvon. It's going to be reported in history books and 50 years from now our children will talk about Trayvon Martin's case like we talk about Emmett Till.

Emmett Till a 14 year old black young man was tortured grossly disfigured and murdered in 1955 in Mississippi after being accused of flirting with a white woman.

In Zimmerman's case State Attorney Corey stepped in and charged Zimmerman with murder on April 11 2012. Prosecutors never argued that Zimmerman racially profiled the teen and instead said the teen was profiled as a criminal.

The five week trial of Zimmerman held in the same Florida city where Trayvon was killed brought the facts of the case under a nationally televised spotlight with every moment captured on camera. More than 50 witnesses testified and when deliberations began Friday afternoon the jury requested a list of the plethora of evidence that lawyers presented.

Some of the items include several statements Zimmerman gave to police Trayvon's autopsy report and photos of both Zimmerman's injuries and Trayvon's body. Witnesses included forensic experts who testified about the angle at which Trayvon was shot the position Zimmerman's gun may have been in and where DNA and blood was found.

Other witnesses offered conflicting statements about how the fight happened who had the upper hand when Zimmerman fired the shot and who was screaming for help in a 911 call recording.

The defense called nine people including both of Zimmerman's parents to testify that the screams belonged to Zimmerman. Both of Trayvon's parents and his brother all said Trayvon was screaming moments before he was shot.

In at times riveting detail prosecutors tried their best to convince jurors that Zimmerman was a killer who tracked Trayvon an innocent teenager and murdered him before police arrived.

That child had every right to be afraid of a strange man following him prosecutor John Guy told jurors before they began deliberations. This case isn't about standing your ground. It's about staying in your car.

Zimmerman attorney O'Mara cast Trayvon as the aggressor saying the teen may have been charged with aggravated battery had he survived the shooting. Trayvon instead of going home likely hid waited for Zimmerman and confronted him the lawyer said.

Elizabeth Parker a former prosecutor who is now a criminal defense attorney in Palm Beach Fla. said the defense did a good job of humanizing Zimmerman .

The defense did a phenomenal job of presenting their case through the state's witnesses Parker said. They were able to get George Zimmerman's testimony in through several witnesses sparing him from having to undergo vigorous cross examination by these bulldog prosecutors.

One such is example was the testimony of Sanford police officer Christopher Serino called by the state and later the defense Parker said. Serino agreed with prosecutors that Zimmerman may have been profiling Trayvon but said no physical evidence or witness statements contradicted Zimmerman's claim of self defense and that the medical examiner's report supported Zimmerman's version of events.

Now that the verdict is in Zimmerman is a free man. But he may have to go into hiding and be unable to live a normal life for some time said Jose Baez the defense attorney who successfully defended Casey Anthony a Florida mother accused of killing her daughter in a high profile capital murder case.

The end is not near for George Zimmerman he said.

Belfast police attacked in second night of riots

Posted on 01:00 by Ashish Chaturvedi

BELFAST United Kingdom (AFP) Police in Belfast were attacked with petrol bombs in a second night of violence by Protestant rioters in the Northern Irish capital.

Bricks bottles furniture and other missiles were also hurled on Saturday following riots that left 32 officers injured and a politician hospitalised on Friday.

Hooded youths some with British flags covering their faces were involved in the clashes in the north of the city.

Police responded by firing baton rounds and deploying water cannon.

The unrest was not as intense as on Friday night when crowds attacked police with petrol bombs sticks fireworks bricks bottles masonry and even a sword.

More than 600 police from mainland Britain had been sent to Northern Ireland in anticipation of tensions over the traditional Twelfth of July parades the pinnacle of the Protestant Orange Order's marching season.

A further 400 were sent for Saturday following riots the night before.

Trouble flared Friday after police tried to enforce a decision by an adjudication body banning the Orange Order from marching through a Catholic republican area of Belfast.

The scenes were both shameful and disgraceful Chief Constable Matt Baggott of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) told reporters.

He criticised leaders in the Orange Order who had called for protests against the decision to block their march through the republican Ardoyne area.

Some of their language was emotive and having called thousands of people to protest they had no plan and no control Baggott said.

Rather than being responsible I think the word for that is reckless.

The PSNI said 32 officers were injured in Friday night's violence. Leading Protestant politician Nigel Dodds was taken to hospital after being hit on the head with a brick and knocked out.

Dodds who represents North Belfast in the British parliament had been trying to calm the crowds down. He was discharged from hospital early on Saturday.

The July 12 parade marks the victory of Protestant king William III of Orange over the deposed Catholic king James II at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690.

It is a flashpoint for tensions between the Protestant and Catholic communities in the province which was devastated by three decades of sectarian violence in the 1970s 1980s and 1990s.

The 1998 Good Friday peace accords largely brought an end to the unrest known as The Troubles although sporadic violence and bomb threats continue.

(CNN) Cory Monteith who played heart throb Finn Hudson in the Fox hit Glee was found dead in a Vancouver hotel room Saturday Vancouver police said. He was 31.

Police said the cause of death was not immediately apparent but they ruled out foul play.

Medical examiners will conduct an autopsy on Monday.

Monteith's body was discovered Saturday noon by staff members at the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel after he missed his checkout time acting Chief Constable Doug LePard told reporters.

He had checked into his room July 6.

The actor apparently had several people over to his room at one point Friday night but LePard said Monteith was seen on hotel surveillance video returning to his room in the early morning hours by himself.

One of his castmates on Glee Mark Salling tweeted a simple no after police held their news conference.

We are in shock and mourning this tragic loss his publicist Melissa Kates said in an e mail.

Monteith spent time in rehab early this year checking into a drug addiction treatment facility in April.

He had been frank about his struggles with substance abuse telling Parade magazine in 2011 that he began using drugs at 13 and by 19 went into rehab after his mother and friends intervened.

Monteith had been on the musical comedy show since it began in 2009.

In 2011 he won a Teen Choice award for top actor in a comedy. The show's cast won a Screen Actors Guild award for an ensemble in a comedy the prior year.
