Malian troops open Frances Bastille Day parade in honor of anti terrorism ...

Posted on 03:00 by Ashish Chaturvedi

Despite the triumphal display which included flyovers by fighter jets tanks and giant trucks mounted with land to air defense systems the realities in Mali suggest that President Francois Hollande s military intervention has had mixed results.

The mission he launched in January helped the Malian government retake control of much of the country from al Qaida linked extremists who had seized northern Mali and threatened the capital. The nation is to hold elections July 28 but tensions involving rebel Tuaregs in the north linger along with political instability.

Sunday s events however focused on the positive.

It s a victory that was won Hollande said in an interview after the parade with the France 2 and TF 1 television stations in the garden of the presidential Elysee Palace. Look at what happened. It was a victory for Africa a victory against terrorism and pride that we must have.

He said earlier the presence of African troops in Paris on the French national day was a tribute to those who actively helped to banish terrorism from the Malian territory.

Referring to trips he s made to Africa including a February visit to Mali four weeks after the start of the French intervention Hollande said I was saluted in Africa not for what I said but for what I did.

He noted that some extremists once lodged in Mali escaped into southern Libya and other neighboring countries. He said those nations need support but we won t make war everywhere.

Hollande oversaw the display of military might that France rolls out each year on Bastille Day with Mali interim President Dioncounda Traore and U.N. chief Ban Ki moon at his sides. Defense ministers from the African nations represented in the parade also were present.

French Defense Minister Jean Yves Le Drian said before the parade that the display is the mark of a solidarity that concretely expressed itself in Mali and of a common destiny even beyond the limits of continents of which we have every reason to be proud.

But some critics say the Mali operation and African presence in the parade reflect France s ambiguous and sometimes patronizing relations with the continent especially with former colonies such as Mali often referred to as Francafrique.

The French non governmental organization Survie which is fighting against neocolonialism condemned the self proclaimed role of gendarme of Africa that France claimed in Mali.

This parade gives a scent of victory to a military operation which is far from being reasonably presented like that given the numerous shadows that surround it and the remaining uncertainties concerning its outcome said Fabrice Tarrit the president of the association.

The critics also include Africans.

Knowing the history of France especially French armies with Africa it doesn t sound good said Senegalese rapper Keyti whose real name is Cheikh Sene 40.

This last decade we ve been trying to be really independent from the French army especially since they had camps in certain countries around Africa he said. And now with what happened in Mali what s still happening there it s like they found another way to come in.

Around 50 Malian troops marched in formation Sunday followed by soldiers from Benin Burkina Faso Ivory Coast Ghana Guinea Liberia Niger Nigeria Senegal Sierra Leone Chad and Togo.

They were followed by troops from the U.N. stabilization mission in Mali which took over the French led military operation on July 1. Some French soldiers who participated in the Mali operation called Serval also marched and aircraft used in Mali notably to provide cover for ground troops were featured in the air display.

France had more than 4 000 troops at the height of the campaign and is now gradually reducing that. France will keep about 1 000 soldiers in Mali after the end of 2013.

In all 4 800 troops marched in front of the presidential stage Sunday along with 241 horses 265 vehicles and 58 planes.

Bringing up the rear was an array of 35 helicopters used in wartime and for civilian missions. Precision parachutists landed in front of the presidential stand to close the parade.

American champion Tyson Gay who went out of his way to promote himself as ...

Posted on 02:00 by Ashish Chaturvedi

The list reads like a Who's Who among the world's best sprinters

Jamaican Asafa Powell the former world record holder at 100 meters.

American champion Tyson Gay who went out of his way to promote himself as an anti drug athlete.

Jamaican Sherone Simpson who has a gold and two silver Olympic medals to her credit.

Word came Sunday that all three had failed drug tests. A sad day one former track official called it and certainly a day that punctured the myth that the oft troubled sport has cleaned up its act.

I am not now nor have I ever been a cheat Powell said in a message released through his Twitter account.

Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt (left) and compatriot Asafa Powell celebrate after finishing first and second in the men's 100m at the Diamond League athletics meet at Bislett Stadium in Oslo June 7 2012.

The 30 year old Powell whose 100 meter record of 9.74 stood until Usain Bolt beat it in 2008 was calling for an investigation as to how a stimulant called oxilofrine entered his system and caused a positive test at Jamaica's national championships in June.

Simpson who tested positive for the same stimulant said she would not intentionally take an illegal substance of any form into my system.

Gay the American record holder in the 100 was more contrite though he wasn't taking full responsibility.

I don't have a sabotage story. I don't have any lies. I don't have anything to say to make this seem like it was a mistake or it was on USADA's hands someone playing games said Gay who fought back sobs in a telephone interview. I don't have any of those stories. I basically put my trust in someone and I was let down.

Gay who won the 100 and 200 meters at U.S. nationals last month said he would pull out of the world championships.

The 30 year old who won the world championship in the 100 200 and 4x100 relay in 2007 took part in the U.S. Anti Doping Agency's My Victory program in which athletes volunteer for enhanced testing to prove they're clean and his results never raised red flags. Until that is an out of competition test May 16 where results came back positive for a banned substance the identity of which neither he nor USADA CEO Travis Tygart would reveal.

Gay said his B sample will be tested soon possibly as early as this week.

Generally first time offenders are hit with two year bans though reduced penalties are sometimes given if there are extenuating circumstances which both Gay and his coach Lance Brauman said there were.

He mentioned that he (trusted) someone and that person was untrustworthy at the end the day Brauman told The Associated Press in a phone interview. Maybe I'm naive but I believe him.

Max Siegel the CEO of USA Track and Field said in a statement It is not the news anyone wanted to hear at any time about any athlete. He said he looked to USADA to handle the case appropriately.

Siegel's predecessor at USATF Doug Logan called it a sad day.

But I don't see anything on the horizon that says this will be abated in any way Logan told AP.

The former CEO recently wrote a column arguing the fight against performance enhancing drugs in sports should be ceded because in his view anti doping rules make very little headway against a problem that never seems to disappear. He said he wasn't surprised when he heard about Sunday's onslaught of failed tests and didn't put much credence into the excuses and apologies from those who came up positive.

Over the course of time culture has bred certain defenses Logan said. The reality is people are using substances to reengineer their bodies or heal better. That's reality.

Four time Olympic medalist and sprint analyst Ato Boldon also called it a difficult day because track and field fans are left not knowing what to believe.

Everyone has that favorite that one guy Hey this is the guy I've always been a supporter of his ' Boldon said. Asafa and Tyson are certainly two people who a lot of track fans have loved and admired for a long time. Unfortunately they failed drug tests.

While Gay's case gets sorted out on U.S. turf the positives recorded by Powell and Simpson are part of a bigger doping crisis hitting Jamaica the home of Bolt and the country that has won 28 medals over the last three Olympics.

In Sunday's editions The Gleaner newspaper of Jamaica reported that five athletes had tested positive. Paul Doyle the agent who represents Powell and Simpson confirmed to the AP that his sprinters were among them. Shortly after Doyle's confirmation Powell and Simpson each released statements acknowledging the positive tests.

The news stirred up angst on the island where success on the track is a point of pride but the rigor of the country's anti doping program is under constant scrutiny.

This does not auger well for track and field globally said Rashalee Mitchell a 29 year old assistant social sciences lecturer at Jamaica's campus of the University of the West Indies. It is fast serving to taint ... our proud and long standing reputation of producing strong excellent raw homegrown talent that has excelled on the world stage without any drug related enhancement.

The news came a month after another Jamaican Olympic gold medalist Veronica Campbell Brown tested positive for a banned diuretic.

Campbell Brown is being suspended while a disciplinary panel reviews her case. Track's governing body said the case appeared to involve a lesser offense which could mean a reduced sentence for the 200 meter champion at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics.

Shortly after news of Campbell Brown's positives her agent Claude Bryan said his client is not a cheat and she does not accept guilt of willfully taking a banned substance.

The known banned substances in these cases a diuretic and a stimulant don't resemble the steroids and designer drugs that took down some of the world's top athletes Marion Jones Tim Montgomery Ben Johnson to name a few over the past years and decades. But many of the denials and claims of extenuating circumstances in the current cases carry a whiff of familiarity.

And once again track is in the news for the wrong reasons falling short of promises the sport's leaders make about cleaning things up every time the next cycle of doping stories hit.

This result has left me completely devastated in many respects said Powell who didn't qualify for individual spots at worlds but could still make Jamaica's relay team if his positive test doesn't net a suspension. I am reeling from this genuinely surprising result. I am confident however that I will come out stronger and wiser and better prepared to deal with the many twists and turns of being a professional athlete.

Tyson Gay tests positive for banned substance

Tyson Gay has tested positive for a banned substance and has said he'll pull out of next month's world championships in Moscow.

Gay told the Associated Press he was notified by the U.S. Anti Doping Agency of the positive test late last week. He wouldn't reveal the substance but said the positive test came from a May 16 out of competition test the AP reported.

I don't have a sabotage story. I don't have any lies. I don't have anything to say to make this seem like it was a mistake or it was on USADA's hands someone playing games said Gay who fought back sobs as he spoke to the AP. I don't have any of those stories. I basically put my trust in someone and I was let down.

He did not disclose to whom he was referring when he said he was let down.

MORE Jamaican sprinters test positive

He would not go into specifics of the case when asked by the AP whether he tested positive for a steroid.

I have to go over everything with USADA first he said. I will take whatever punishment I get like a man. I do realize and respect what I put in my body and it is my responsibility.

I'm going to be honest with USADA about everything everybody I've been with every supplement I've ever taken every company I've ever dealt with everything.

REACTION Gay's coach speaks out against doping

USADA released a statement Sunday confirming the positive test. In response to Mr. Gay's statements USADA appreciates his approach to handling this situation and his choice to voluntarily remove himself from competition while the full facts surrounding his test are evaluated the statement read. The B sample will be processed shortly and as in all cases all athletes are innocent unless or until proven otherwise through the established legal process and any attempt to sensationalize or speculate is a disservice to due process fair play and to those who love clean sport.

USA Track Field CEO Max Siegel released a statement that said it supports USADA in the fight against drugs in sport. We do not know the facts of this case and look to USADA to adjudicate it and handle it appropriately. It is not the news anyone wanted to hear at any time about any athlete.

Gay 30 has struggled with injuries the past five years. This season he has run the top three fastest times in the world in the 100 meters. He won gold at the U.S. championships in Des Moines last month dominating the field to finish in 9.75 seconds. It was his fourth U.S. title at the distance. He also claimed the 200 title at nationals winning in 19.74 seconds. It's the second fastest time in the 200 this season just .01 second behind Usain Bolt's 19.73 which he ran last weekend.

Gay is the American record holder in the 100 with a 9.69 set in 2007 the season he was a world champion in the 100 200 and 4x100.

Earlier this season he spoke of overcoming major hip surgery in 2011. People are quick to forget some of the things you have accomplished he said.

At last summer's London Olympics Gay was heartbroken after coming in fourth in the 100 failing to win a bronze medal by one hundredth of a second. I just ran with all my heart Gay said. There was nothing left in the tank. I didn't get a medal but I gave it my all.

He won an Olympic silver medal as part of the USA's 4x100 relay team in London.

In the past Gay had been part of USADA's My Victory. I compete clean program with 10 other athletes from Summer Olympic sports. His statement on the USADA web site read I compete clean because I really believe in fairness and besides that my Mom would kill me Just being honest. My mother and my sister have been great role models for me.

Freak Show Tim Lincecums no hitter a show of will

Posted on 00:00 by Ashish Chaturvedi

For anybody who has seen him regularly over the last season and a half the natural reaction was Lincecum Really ''

More often than not in 2012 and '13 Tim Lincecum has looked lost bewildered absolutely incapable of recapturing the brilliance he displayed in his two Cy Young Award winning seasons which feel like decades ago.

Even when he was striking out more than a batter an inning he could seem like the worst starting pitcher in the National League which statistically he was last season.

And then he goes out and throws a no hitter he wills his way to a no hitter with an unfathomable 148 pitches and thoughts of glory days past and maybe even future flicker through your head.

Lincecum Really

He appeared to have a better chance of getting sent to the bullpen or of getting shipped out of town altogether what with his free agency approaching and the San Francisco Giants fading fast than of shackling an opponent.

BIG TIME TIMMY No hitter latest feat on Lincecum's resume

This is a guy who came into Saturday's 9 0 gem against the San Diego Padres with a 4 9 record earned fully on merit accompanied by a 4.61 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP.

Granted he had only received 12 runs of support in his last 10 starts but Lincecum had lost nine of his last 11 decisions with a 4.78 ERA in that stretch. He had seven quality starts in 18 appearances. The last time he'd thrown a complete game was in 2011.

There was not much evidence such a breakthrough was in the offing.

PENCE WITH THE SAVE Outfielder's amazing catch preserves gem

The one thing Lincecum has maintained through these turbulent last two seasons in the ability to strike batters out and that proved a huge factor on Saturday. He registered nearly half his outs 13 of 27 via strikeout including six in a row between the second and fourth innings.

But strikeouts also build up his pitch counts as do walks one of his chief bugaboos. There have been times when he's been so out of sync unfurling from that unique windup of his you'd swear every batter started with a three ball count.

Lincecum walked four Padres but manager Bruce Bochy said he had no intention of pulling him even as the pitch count mounted and Lincecum himself sounded ready to get past the 150 pitch mark if needed.

I wasn't thinking it was the last out at the end of the no hitter '' he told reporters. I was just running on adrenaline the last couple of innings. My mind kept wanting to go into pitching mode.''

SORRY BLUE Lincecum's wild moment

And indeed pitch and pitch some more he did throwing more than anybody else during a no hitter except for Edwin Jackson in 2010 when he completed his gem with one more pitch at 149.

Lincecum will get an extended rest with the All Star break coming and who knows if this game marks the beginning of a return to his old form. That's probably unlikely but regardless for this one night the Freak show was back on.

WWE Money In The Bank 2013 Live Results Reaction and Analysis

Posted on 21:00 by Ashish Chaturvedi

Welcome to the Bleacher Report live coverage of Money in the Bank 2013. The event emanates from the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia Pennsylvania.

This year's MITB is stacked with the two signature ladder matches and five title matches. We also have Chris Jericho against Ryback in a match where the result will be a good indicator of Ryback's future.

Even with all that gold on the line the two ladder matches are the main focus of this event. Two men will walk out with briefcases containing guaranteed title shots at the time and place of their choosing.

We could even see someone cash in the same night or the following night on Raw. The different possibilities this event presents make this one of the most unpredictable nights of the year.

While the All Star MITB match contains a few former winners the World Title MITB match only has one past winner so there is a very good chance of seeing at least one first time briefcase winner.

Other than John Cena every Money in the Bank winner has cashed in and won the title so winning tonight will almost certainly guarantee a title reign for that person.

The All Star MITB also has a bit of a surprise element to it since Kane has been taken out of the equation. WWE has not announced the name of the final participant yet so we could see another big return besides Rob Van Dam or possibly even one of the losers in the WWE or World title match.

Here is a quick rundown of the card as it currently stands.

The Shield (c) vs. The Usos (Tag Title Match on the Pre Show) Chris Jericho vs. Ryback Curtis Axel (c) vs. Miz (IC Title Match) AJ Lee (c) vs. Kaitlyn (Divas Title Match) Alberto Del Rio (c) vs. Dolph Ziggler (World Title Match) John Cena (c) vs. Mark Henry (WWE Title Match) TBD vs. Randy Orton vs. CM Punk vs. Daniel Bryan vs. Sheamus vs. Christian vs. RVD (WWE Title MITB Match) Wade Barrett vs. Cody Rhodes vs. Damien Sandow vs. Fandango vs. Jack Swagger vs. Antonio Cesaro vs. U.S. Champion Dean Ambrose (World Title MITB Match)

Two different teams are in the World Title MITB Match together so we could see some partners turn on each other when they end up on opposite sides of the ladder. We could also see the Wyatt Family make an appearance. Anything could happen.

Make sure to bookmark this page and come back Sunday at the start of the pre show for live coverage of all the action as it happens on pay per view.

Before the show starts feel free to share your predictions for the show below.

Thanks for reading and follow me on Twitter BR_Doctor.
